The Muslims You Cannot See | Sahar Habib Ghazi | TEDxStanford

As an American Muslim journalist, Sahar often finds herself being “othered” because she doesn’t fit into popular perception of what Muslims are, or, what she calls, the “Muslim box” built by Hollywood, the news industry and politicians. In this talk, she explains what being Muslim means to her and how the world’s 1.7 billion Muslims are “so vast, varied, and intersectional that they cannot possibly fit into a box.” Sahar also warns that powerful privileged people use this box to build structural Islamophobia. As the mother of a 4-year-old daughter and a former Stanford Knight Fellow, Ghazi says it is time to change the conversation about what it means to be Muslim today.

Sahar Habib Ghazi is the managing editor at Global Voices, a trusted international community of 1400 editors, writers, and translators who report on untold stories in more than 167 countries. Ghazi has lived half her life in the U.S. and half in Pakistan, reporting for The New York Times, DawnNews TV and Geo News TV. In 2009, she produced The Disposable Ally, the first documentary series on U.S. and Pakistan relations. Ghazi was a Knight Journalism fellow at Stanford University in 2011. As a multi-media journalist, editor and podcaster, Ghazi aims to disrupt unjust dominant narratives about marginalized communities.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  1. No Churches allowed, No Temples allowed, No space to celebrate our cultural festivals in public places in an Islamic country that's the message you convey to the global community about your 'religion of peace'๐Ÿ™

  2. Jesus Is King and is the only way to The Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me,

6And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

  3. Being a Eurasian (Half White and Half Asian) I have never realized that being a Muslim is such a burden.

Iโ€™m half Lutheran and half Buddhist. Not sure why anyone should feel insecure in the United States about their religion. I grew up in San Francisco (1953 to 1965) my first twelve years and never had to โ€œexplainโ€ anything to anybody about who I was and why I looked โ€œdifferent.โ€

I give my Mother most of the credit for that. She taught me to respect people. She taught me that I was special but no more special than anybody else.

And to ALWAYS be aware of the feelings of others.

Shouldnโ€™t this be the Universal Credo by which we conduct ourselves? Isnโ€™t cross-cultural โ€œgetting-alongโ€ a two-way street?

Iโ€™m 68 years old. Grew up in an Italian/Jewish/WASP neighbourhood in San Francisco. I donโ€™t lack for exposure to different cultures, etc, but my complaint with Muslims: Why do so many Muslims DEMAND special treatment?

    Just wondering ๐Ÿคซ

  4. My 13 year-old daughter wants to know why doesnโ€™t FEMA help the inhabitants of Washington state, Oregon, and California about the wildfires.

I told her the citizens are supposed to alert the government. Mayors and governors work together. To ask the President for national aid. It is paid.

Why doesnโ€™t anybody know? Our Muslim sisters on both coasts and in all major cities should pray or be more vocal about this.

    Anybody here Sep 2020?

  5. I thought she said she is Muslim, and even though she dresses like a non-Muslims, still they don't except so why to bother dressing like them and leaving what your Religion responsibilities tell and sell your Religion and put yourself in danger that you could be in hellfire when you die because you didn't follow your Religion who can save you in life and life hereafter, and why Arab women embarrass our Religion and no one can force you to be Muslim if you don't want and we don't need you; it doesn't matter where you come from if your real Muslim or be whoever you want to be but, don't stand in the fort of million non-Muslims and dress like them and act like your crying and we not like who do you say we are we Muslims are strong and stay with what we believe

  6. There are factual errors I think. France and some other countries banned wearing full face covering veils in public places, not more than that. (Even in Islamic countries such full face covering masks are very rarely seen!) The minority of believers who are part of terrorist activities are doing so by strictly adhering to the Quranic verses. Of course those Quran verses might have been sensible those days and at those places in the context of consistent rivalries. The issue is that the preachers and priests promote those scriptures as valid for ever, irrespective of time and place.
And, Islamophobia – when a group of believers insist that every one in the world should follow those 7th scriptures, it's quite natural. Democracy and free society is never understood by any religion, which is enjoyed by the great majority of people in this world.

  7. Dear human beings on little planet Earth โ˜บ GOD LOVES US ALL UNCONDITIONALLY WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ…MUSLIMS. ..CHRISTIANS. ..INDUISTS. ..BUDDHISTS etc since HE IS PURE LOVE AND HIGH INTELLIGENCE AND THAT'S THE ONLY THING HE ASKS…..HE DOES N'T PUNISH ANYBODY( AS RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES OF ALL KINDS SAY ). ..HE ALLOWS FREE WILL BECAUSE YOU ARE HERE TO MAKE MISTAKES….TO LEARN AND EXPAND SPIRITUALLY etc AND IF YOU HAVE A MISERABLE LIFE. ..YOU ARE CREATORS. ..WE ARE ALL CREATORS OF WHAT WE LIVE. …LOVE OTHERS. ..BE OPEN TO GOOD WILL AND HAVE A CLEAR SOUL. ..THAT'S PARADISE! !! THE REST IS STUPIDITIES …CLOTHING…FESTS…etc HE DOESN'T CARE AT ALL โ˜บโ˜บโ˜บ. …Oh and don't forget to love HIM without fear…THAT'S THE BEST GOD AND BELIEVE ME HE EXISTS โคโคโค

  9. A Muslim woman must wear a hijab or khimar and cover her body because her prayers will not be accepted if she does not.
If a person's prayer is not accepted or a person does not pray 5 times a day that person is not a Muslim.
In which chapters and the number of these verses are you talking about.[YOU NEED PROOF]
No verse is vague in the Quran.[WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS THAT EVERYTHING IS ALLOWED IN ISLAME]

  10. I wish entire civilization understand and acknowledge this facts. I don't know the Truth about conflicts that killed many people in past. What I'm watching is truth and it's happening all over the world. Whatever the reason is, people are killing people with their own believes, inconclusive ability to understand how human believes works.

  11. Her talk does not help in any way. she should speak about the controversial things about islam like Jehad and kafir etc. All muslims dream only one thing they want whole world to convert to islam and they always keep trying for it. she is also doing the same presenting fake positives of islam and not talking about negatives of islam
