Families are becoming smaller, and young people are postponing marriage, having fewer children, and getting divorced, something that was unthinkable a few generations ago. Contrary to the belief that the nuclear family is most important within a kinship network, intergenerational relationships have an important role to play in strengthening family bonds. However, intergenerational conflict is also present and exists as a result of prejudice, cultural, social or economic discrepancies. Problems can arise as a result of the vastly different communication styles exhibited by individuals born in different eras.
This session explores intergenerational relationships and the possible conflicts that could have a negative impact on family bonds.
Driving Questions:
How has the culture and social setup affected family relationships over generations?
What are the reasons behind intergenerational conflict?
How do we address this conflict?
